(NewsNation) — Confirmed Ebola cases in the eastern Congo have climbed to 1,003, including 254 deaths, according to Congo’s Ministry of Health.

That’s up from 956 cases and 247 deaths reported Saturday.

The health ministry says 100 people have recovered since the outbreak was declared May 15 in Congo’s Ituri province. At least 365 patients remain hospitalized or in isolation.

The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment.

Contact tracing, considered critical to controlling Ebola, has only reached 55% coverage so far, officials said. They still haven’t identified “patient zero,” and they’re trying to trace more than 35,000 people who have come in contact with infected individuals.

“We don’t have confidence on when this outbreak started,” Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya told The Associated Press.

Response efforts have been further complicated by ongoing attacks in Ituri by the Islamic State-backed Allied Democratic Forces, which have cut off access to villages and forced residents to flee.

At the Kigonze camp in Bunia, which houses more than 20,000 displaced people, camp officials reported 10 deaths last week under “unusual circumstances,” though no Ebola cases have been confirmed at the site.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said at least 2 million displaced people, including over 320,000 refugees, are living in areas at risk. In a statement, it said it was “deeply concerned by the accelerating spread” of the virus.
