Atlantic staff writer Elaine Godfrey published an audio recording of guards kicking her out of Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s campaign event after Crockett denied the interaction happened. On Tuesday, Semafor reported that an Atlantic journalist was kicked out of Crockett’s campaign event on Monday in Lubbock, Texas. When asked about it on Wednesday, Crockett, who is running for Senate, said there’s “no evidence” of the exchange, saying it’s “silly season,” before adding that that journalist has a “history of being less than truthful,” and has been sued for defamation before and lost. On Thursday, Godfrey identified herself as the journalist who was tossed out of the event. “It is sad that there’s any news outlet that actually would have her on staff when you know as a journalist, the one thing that matters most is truth,” Crockett told CBS News on Wednesday. But on Friday, Godfrey published the audio recording of the exchange between her and one of the event’s staffers. Godfrey said “a woman with a badge” approached her and told her she had to leave. When Godfrey asked why, she said the staffer looked at her phone and said, “They just said, ‘Elaine from Atlantic, white girl with a hat and notepad. She’s interviewing people in the crowd. She’s a top-notch hater and will spin. She needs to leave.’” Godfrey said security guards then escorted her out of the building. Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, said in a statement shared to HuffPost that Crockett’s behavior is “unacceptable.” “In a democracy, elected officials answer questions from the press rather than hide from them,” Goldberg said. “This is completely unacceptable behavior by Rep. Crockett and her team, and needs to be addressed immediately.” Anna Bross, senior vice president of communications for The Atlantic, debunked Crockett’s claim that Godfrey has been sued for defamation. Crockett’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The interaction comes about seven months after Godfrey wrote a profile on Crockett for The Atlantic. After Crockett heard that Godfrey was interviewing other members of Congress about her, Godfrey said Crockett told her she was “shutting down the profile and revoking all provisions” before the story was published. On CNN on Friday, Godfrey said she believes Crockett is likely still bothered by the profile published about her. “I think she’s still upset about that story even though I think it was a pretty fair story,” Godfrey said. “I think it was good. I’m biased of course. ... She can call me a hater. It’s the being kicked out that doesn’t work for me.” Semafor also reported this isn’t the first incident in recent weeks that Crockett has crashed with the media. Earlier this month, Crockett’s campaign called the Capitol Police after CNN reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere tried to visit her campaign office, alleging he was trespassing.
