Team USA women’s hockey stars Hilary Knight and Megan Keller made a surprise cameo on “SNL” this weekend to clown Donald Trump over his degrading joke about inviting their squad to the nation’s capital. (Watch the moment below.) During the “Saturday Night Live” monologue, host and “Heated Rivalry” star Connor Storrie shared his doubts that he pulled off his role in the hit HBO Max show after watching athletes on the ice at this year’s Winter Olympics. That’s when U.S. men’s hockey stars and brothers Quinn and Jack Hughes — the latter of whom scored the golden, overtime goal in the Olympic final over Canada — crashed Studio 8H. The two noted that they didn’t get around to the actor’s queer hockey romance during their undefeated run in Milan. “Oh, I hope some hockey players watched it,” Storrie said just before Knight and Keller, the latter of whom secured gold with an overtime goal of her own over Canada in her team’s final, walked onto the stage. The cameo by the two women’s stars caused the “SNL” crowd to erupt in applause for nearly 30 seconds. “Oh wow, Hilary and Megan, it’s so cool that we’re all here,” Storrie said. “It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys too,” quipped Knight, who described Trump’s joke during his congratulatory phone call with the winning men’s team as “distasteful and unfortunate” earlier in the week. “Yeah, we thought we’d give them a little moment to shine,” added Keller while giving Quinn Hughes a playful nudge on the arm. The men’s team, which faced criticism for laughing in response to Trump’s joke, accepted the president’s invitation to attend his State of the Union address and visit the White House. The women’s team turned down the president’s grudging invitation to also attend the SOTU address, citing scheduling conflicts. Trump has said the women’s team will be honored with a White House visit “soon.” In the days since, some members of the men’s team have expressed regret over the locker room laughter. On “SNL,” Storrie noted that “Heated Rivalry” speaks to those who don’t always get representation in the sport and applauded the hockey stars of both teams for making a surprise appearance on the NBC comedy sketch show.
