I couldn't tell just by looking at the cast. The first television series to grace the world of "Shondaland," you'll be happy to hear that Shonda Rhimes made her mark in the industry as the creator of Grey's Anatomy. Now on air for over 20 years, this show has proven that all it takes is a great idea and an audience open to supporting a new show in order to find success. Another brain child of Shonda Rhimes, Bridgerton on Netflix is based on the popular series of period romance novels by Julia Quinn. The show has turned period dramas on its head with its diverse cast and classical spin on contemporary hit songs like "All I Wanted" by Paramore. The MCU saw its second female-directed superhero movie come to life under the direction of Nia DaCosta for The Marvels. We follow Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) as they team up against a Kree villain and save the universe from total destruction. Don't let some of the naysayers in nerd culture sway you -- this is a great watch with strong female leads and important post-credit scenes. Shonda's on a roll in this list! Scandal premiered seven years after the success of Grey's Anatomy. In between the two shows, she also created and wrote Private Practice, which went on to run for six seasons. With one of the most dramatic love stories depicted on television, this show is a must-binge. This boxing drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal was directed by Antoine Fuqua, a Black American producer and director. It also boasts a diverse cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson, and Naomie Harris. A moving story about a boxer's fall and rise, Gyllenhaal delivers an incredible performance. While you may know that this series stars Issa Rae, you might not know that she's also the mastermind behind it. It debuted after her web series Awkward Black Girl found success on YouTube. When Insecure ended with the conclusion of Season 5, Rae went on to write and executive-produce more shows like HBO Max's Rap Sh!t. This show is perfect for a weekend binge full of laughs and drama. Antoine Fuqua directed this fast-paced action drama. Gerard Butler stars as an officer who must save the President (Aaron Eckhart) from terrorists who've taken over the White House. While the story itself is something we've seen before, Fuqua's direction and action sequences are absolutely thrilling to enjoy. Based on the novel A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, this film adaptation was directed by Ava DuVernay. As a lifelong fan of the novel, watching this film in theaters was incredibly moving, particularly with the casting of Black actress Storm Reid in the main role of Meg Murray. A beautiful story about love, trust, and empowerment, this film will get you in your feels. This miniseries was executive produced by Ava DuVernay, who also directed the first episode. Based on the comic book series DMZ and starring Rosario Dawson, we follow several groups navigating a rough life in a futuristic post-war United States. This is a tense drama that makes you think about what life could be like in a worst-case scenario of our current political climate. Created and written by Quinta Brunson, this hit comedy series has brought some much-needed humor while shining a light on the world of educators. Brunson also stars in this series alongside Tyler James Williams and Janelle James. Heavy on the laughs, the series is a breeze to binge, and you'll easily fall in love with the cast. This miniseries, based on a memoir of the same name, was created by author Tembi Locke and her sister Attica Locke. With five episodes directed by Nzingha Stewart, it follows an artist (Zoe Saldaña) who falls in love with a chef in Italy, while exploring some of the challenges of life and loss that follow. This romcom was directed by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker. It stars Katie Holmes as Samantha MacKenzie, daughter of a U.S. president who tries to enjoy college as a normal civilian. This flick is a cute romance to enjoy with the girls.
