The internet has unofficially renamed the World Cup…

The World Cup is in full swing, with host cities rolling out the welcome mat for fans arriving from every corner of the globe.

And while it’s, technically, a massive international sporting tournament, TikTok has already renamed it.

Enter: the Great International Sleepover.

Think of it like a chaotic family gathering where all the cousins you never see (because your parents had a falling out in 2009 and nobody talks about it) suddenly end up under one roof. 

Online, doomscrolling has briefly taken a back seat as feeds fill with clips of celebrations, fan chants, and street parties from across the pond.

For once, the internet feels like a group chat that’s actually getting along, and we’re all here for it. 

Some have even gone as far as to call the World Cup a kind of emotional reset in an otherwise pretty dystopian-feeling era.

“I think the World Cup is healing America,” author J.R Wallington (@atwerkinprogress) shared. “This couldn’t have come at a better time, we were at our wits’ end with the current administration and all the s**t that’s been going down”.

“We really needed the world to come here and just be excited to be here, be excited to experience our culture, be excited to just be with each other and have a great time,” she added. 

Elsewhere, Aditi (@aditibussells) says the vibes are high because for “the first time ever, everyday people are centre stage. Not our government, not our policies, not the structures – but the people.”

And if the celebratory footage is anything to go by, they’re probably right – with plenty of people online now calling for these “international sleepovers” to become a regular thing.
