I'm Sara, and I cover the fitness and health sphere on BuzzFeed — from finding the best snacks to sharing the easiest hacks on staying fit. This bar is VERY protein-dense, with over half of the macros coming from protein. This bar is above average in protein while keeping sodium low. And bonus, there's no added sugar. For being the smallest bar at only 40 grams, it's still high in protein while being low in calories. It also contains collagen. This bar is not considered super high in protein, especially given its higher calorie and fat content. The sodium is a bit higher as well, especially if you're on a heart-healthy diet. While this bar is still high in protein, its macro breakdown puts it close to equal fat and carb content, with carbs making up the majority at 37%. It's also high in sodium for a 63-gram serving. This bar has only 1 gram of added sugar, which is great, and it's 18 grams of protein. It also has some iron (1.6 milligrams), calcium (120 milligrams), and potassium (170 milligrams). This is the bar that has the highest amount of protein, but with it being the biggest bar (88 grams), it's also the highest in all of the other breakdowns, including calories, sodium, fats, and carbs. Initial Thoughts: This bar was sticky. I had to peel the entire bar out of the wrapper. It's fairly thin for a protein bar, which I found easier to eat. The Taste: I'm not sure if it's the bar in general or just because it's a cookie flavor, but it was very soft and chewy, with a dough-like consistency. Because it’s thinner, the texture didn’t feel like that of a typical protein bar, though, and it didn't have me chewing for years. Bar Superlative: Most Like Eating Cookie Dough (But Make It Protein-Heavy) Initial Thoughts: I liked the texture — it was like eating a candy bar. It didn't have the typical "brick-like," dense texture protein bars have, but rather an airy, rice-like candy bar texture. The Taste: It definitely tasted as sweet as a candy bar, too. The chocolate coating and inside filling made it taste more snack-like, instead of packing protein in EVERY. SINGLE. BITE. There was no chewing fatigue. Bar Superlative: Most Like An Actual Dessert Initial Thoughts: This is a small bar, but it feels even lighter than it is. It's coated in dark chocolate (my favorite), but it feels almost hollow. The Taste: The inside is collagen, so it's truly like biting into a chocolate-coated marshmallow. If it were any larger, it might be tiresome to chew, but because it's smaller, it felt like the perfect amount of chocolate and collagen. Bar Superlative: Most Likely To Crave When You Want S'mores Initial Thoughts: Out of all the bars, this has to be the most different. It's basically a wafer cookie covered in a light coating of pink strawberry crème. The Taste: It tastes like the classic strawberry wafers I grew up eating. The protein taste is very subtle; I wouldn't have known it was packed with any just by the taste alone. It is very sweet, which I don't hate, but definitely didn't expect. Bar Superlative: Most UNLIKE A Protein Bar Initial Thoughts: This one is messy. The sprinkles are falling off, and it's crumbling the second I pull it out of the wrapper. The Taste: This is pretty much your typical protein bar: very artificially sweet, dense, and chewy. By the third bite, I started getting some chewing fatigue and had to save the other half for later. Bar Superlative: Most Mostly To Sit Forgotten In The Back Of Your Pantry Initial Thoughts: This is a lot thinner than I expected. Most protein bars I've tried in the past are thick and heavy, so I actually prefer how thin and light this one is. The Taste: Okay, despite being thin, it still has that dense, brick-like texture that makes chewing a chore. It's a good chocolate flavor, but I don't get the distinct Hershey's Chocolate flavor from it. Bar Superlative: Most Likely To Scratch Your Chocolate Fix Itch Initial Thoughts: This bar is HUGE and heavy. It has a candy bar-like texture rather than the average brick-like protein bar texture. The Taste: This was a big bite AND it was a bit chewy, so it wasn't the easiest thing to just snack on. If Reese's Fast Break were made into a protein bar, I would imagine it being just like this — pretty sweet, but you can still taste the added protein. Bar Superlative: Most Likely To Give You A Sugar Crash I was already wary of this one because it's higher in sodium (something I try to reduce in my daily diet), and the macro breakdown just isn't great. But the flavor was even more disappointing — it was messy to eat from the start, and every bite left me with more chewing fatigue. I really, really wanted to like this one. It's such a trendy and popular brand right now, and with calories so low and protein so high, it makes sense that it's getting more buzz. But even with great macros, I cannot picture myself buying this flavor again, at least. It was sticky to the point that it stuck to my fingers and the roof of my mouth, and it had a basic protein bar flavor that didn't do anything new. I appreciate how different this one is; it definitely didn't taste like a protein bar or really any kind of "bar treat" itself. Maybe with another flavor, I could give it another chance. But this one in particular doesn't have the best macros, and it's just super sweet. Yes, I did like it, but I still needed a glass of milk to wash it down with — which is, personally, wild for a protein snack. This one is confusing to me, because the first three bites? Amazing. After that? I'm done, pack it up. The protein content alone makes it worth it for me as a swap for a sweet treat, but I can't imagine eating this too often, or even finding myself reaching for it over all protein bars. If you took out one thing — whether that is the caramel, peanut butter, or chocolate — I think it would actually improve it. I opted for the Hershey’s flavor at the last minute instead of the Reese’s one, but I might be going back for that flavor. While it had your average protein bar flavor, I still appreciate that it was thinner and easier to chew than most protein bars. The added nutrients are also big for me, too. This texture won't be for everyone, but it sure was for me. It was the perfect balance of sweetness, with a marshmallow-like flavor and a slightly bitter dark chocolate coating. It's so small that I could finish it in a couple of bites if I'm really hungry, but the chewy texture makes it feel more filling than it looks. It's smaller, so yes, the calories are lower, but the protein is still high enough that it's a worthy ratio for me. This wasn't a huge surprise to me, as some of their flavors have been in my gym snack rotation in the past. But this bar is made for those who want a high-protein snack without it tasting like one. You could've told me this was a new Hershey's candy bar, and I would've 100% believed you. And it has a total of 20 grams of protein! Macro- and flavor-wise, it's perfect.
