Works to repair the huge sinkhole in Godstone are set to complete during June, with the full reopening of the road scheduled for early July.

Dozens of homes in High Street were evacuated when part of the road collapsed on 17 February, 2025.

Surrey County Council said repairs would be completed by December, then by the end of spring. Now, it says work will definitely be finished in June, with the road reopening in July.

Councillor Matt Furniss said: "Our focus has always been on getting this right, to ensure the area is safe and stable for local people and those travelling through the area."

The council's highways team finished filling in the network of underground mines beneath the road in April.

Sutton and East Surrey Water (SES) then began reinstating the damaged water pipes.

The highway's team will return on 2 June to rebuild the road and pavements. Work is expected to be complete in the week of 29 June.

A council spokesperson said: "Due to the complexity of underground conditions and other utility pipework on the high street, SES's work to repair their 16-inch pipe is now expected to be completed in early July.

"The road will therefore be reopened under two-way traffic lights during this time, ahead of the full reopening when SES works are completed."

Furniss said he was "delighted" work will soon be coming to an end and thanked residents and businesses for "their patience while we have dealt with this incredibly challenging incident over the past 15 months".
