Colbert Torches His Own Network's News For Major Mistake During Trump's China Trip

As Stephen Colbert’s tenure at CBS draws to a close next week, the “Late Show” host didn’t miss the chance to take some final shots at the network during Thursday’s show. Colbert mocked the fact that CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil was unable to get a visa ahead of President Donald Trump’s state visit to China this week, forcing him to broadcast from nearby Taiwan. “All the news teams are on the ground in China to cover this epic and historic summit,” Colbert said. “All except one because our CBS News colleague Tony Dokoupil is being forced to broadcast from Taiwan after failing to get a Chinese visa in time.” “Well, that is disappointing, but it does fit in with their slogan: CBS News, when events happen, we’re at most one country away,” Colbert continued. Sources told the New York Post that CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss wanted Dokoupil in Beijing covering the trip because rival network anchor David Muir of ABC News was going to be there. However, it was reportedly too late for Dokoupil to get a visa.
