JD Vance’s Live Call To Trump Doesn’t Go As Planned

Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday tried to get Donald Trump on the phone during an appearance in Hungary, but the president initially didn’t pick up. (Check out the awkward moment in the clip below.) To kick off his remarks at a campaign rally for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (an ally of Russian leader Vladimir Putin), Vance pulled a phone out of his pocket and noted he had a “special guest” who wanted to dial in. “We’ll see — let’s hope he actually answers or this is going to be very embarrassing,” Vance said, as members of the crowd began taking out their smart devices in anticipation. Unfortunately for Vance, his first bud didn’t get on the horn. “I’m sorry, the person you’re trying to reach has a voicemail box that has not been set up yet. Please try —,” a robotic voice from Vance’s phone said as the veep awkwardly turned his device toward the microphones. “OK, try one more time,” Vance said as some rallygoers chuckled. In his second crack at a call, the vice president got the “good signal” he hoped for. “It’s ringing. It’s progress,” Vance said, seconds before putting the phone on speaker. “Hello, Mr. President. How are you?” As the veep flipped the phone toward the mics, Trump didn’t appear to be prepared to speak. “Hi, JD, can you give me a second, I’ve just —,” Trump said as the veep flashed a smile while the crowd erupted in applause. “Wow, that’s some — that’s some crowd you have there, JD.” “Mr. President, you are on with about 5,000 Hungarian patriots and I think they love you even more than they love Viktor Orbán,” Vance replied, referring to the far-right autocratic Hungarian leader who has described migrants as “poison” and gone after LGBTQ+ rights over the years. JD must’ve made a very good speech to get this kind of a response,” the president said of his second in command. “How did JD do? Did he give a good speech, everybody?” The veep, who had yet to begin his speech, jumped in, “It’s very early, sir.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
