A fight that reportedly started inside a Northern California bar and spilled out onto the street turned deadly for one man who, presumably fleeing officers, jumped off a two-story high patio and landed on the rocky beach below.

The March 21 incident, according to SFGATE, unfolded around 1 a.m. in the 600 block of Cannery Row in Monterey.

Police responded to the area and witnessed some of the altercation. As they attempted to make contact, they noticed that one of the people involved in the altercation appeared to have been knocked out during the brawl, while another man fled.

Officers chased the suspect, but lost sight of him in the 400 block of Cannery Row, near the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Despite searching the area, they were unable to locate him.

An ambulance was requested for the assault victim, who was treated at the hospital and later released. Police said the person did not want to help with the investigation.

Plaza Hotel staff contacted police around 8:15 a.m. the same morning after reviewing video of a person jumping over the patio railing at approximately 1:10 a.m. While officers were responding to the hotel, a person came into the police department asking if their relative had been arrested because he had not returned home the previous night.

After seeing the hotel’s surveillance footage and speaking with the relative, a fire department boat was requested to help search for the man.

He was located around noon some distance from where he jumped off the promenade and was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
