Family and friends are mourning a teenager killed in a golf cart mishap near Lake Norman on Monday.

“Julia Rooney was not only a teammate, but a friend, a light in our gym, and someone who made an impact on everyone she met,” officials with ATA Cheer Lake Norman, a Mooresville cheerleading and tumbling center, said on social media. “The mat will never feel the same without her.”

Mooresville Police said the incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. and involved several young people at the intersection of Swamp Rose Drive and Golden Star Lane.

That’s in a subdivision between Beech Tree Road and Forest Lake Boulevard, both of which are off Brawley School Road near the Woodland Heights elementary and middle schools.

Police said they are still investigating the case, which they described in a news release Tuesday as a golf cart accident, and would release no other details.

“Our thoughts are with the families impacted during this difficult time,” police said.

A crash reconstruction team from the Mooresville Police Department was back at the scene Tuesday afternoon, Charlotte Observer news partner WSOC reported.

Counselors and other resources are available for students and staff at Woodland Heights Middle School, according to the station.

ATA Cheer called the teen’s death “heartbreaking.”

“From her days as a youth athlete to her time as a senior, she always carried the same bright smile,” ATA Cheer officials said. “Please keep Julia’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as we all navigate this loss together.”

The gym on Rolling Hill Road “will be open for anyone who needs a place to gather, reflect, or be together,” officials said. “Once a part of our gym, always a part of our family.”
