FedEx is launching SameDay Local, a service that enables customers to choose two-hour or end-of-day delivery at checkout, according to a March 24 press release. The service is in collaboration with last-mile delivery solution OneRail and will connect FedEx customers to a national network of over 1,000 delivery providers, per the release. Large, oversized or specialized deliveries are also eligible for SameDay Local. OneRail’s last-mile orchestration platform provides flexible integration through API connections and full platform support, according to the release. Artificial intelligence is then used to automatically assign a delivery provider and route for optimal delivery performance. Near-real-time tracking is also available for pickup and drop-off, alongside an estimated time of arrival and proof of delivery, according to the release. The service will also offer proactive monitoring and 24/7 support to anticipate delays and disruptions throughout the entire process. FedEx has been working to increase volume, improve service and provide faster delivery to more locations, reporting that it saw its most profitable peak season ever last quarter, per an earnings call Thursday. The solution comes as companies push faster speeds to meet consumer demand. Amazon, for instance, recently launched one-hour and three-hour U.S. delivery options for over 90,000 products, including pantry items and cleaning supplies. Walmart has also made efforts to grow its 3-hour delivery reach while discount retailer Dollar General continues to expand its same-day delivery offering. Target has also focused on delivery options, announcing plans earlier this year to launch next-day delivery in select markets.
