Storms knock out power for thousands in the Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE (PINPOINT WEATHER) β Strong storms moving through the Charlotte area Monday morning left thousands of people without electricity. According to Duke Energy, about 6,000 customers in the Charlotte area lost power as powerful thunderstorms brought heavy wind and rain, and possibly even tornadoes, across the region. Damaging winds, tornadoes possible as severe weather rolls through Charlotte One of the largest outage clusters was in south Charlotte near the Sharon Woods area, where more than 1,400 outages were reported. The outage there was first reported around 10:18 a.m., and crews are currently working on damage assessments and repairs. Another pocket of outages was affecting about 1,000 customers in Uptown, particularly along North Graham Street. Across the Carolinas, Duke Energy reported 306 active outages impacting about 9,035 customers as of late Monday morning. Duke Energy said crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible while they continue assessing storm damage.
