Top Democrat Reveals Why He Walked Out Of Trump's Speech: 'Americans Know The Truth'

President Donald Trump delivered what many pundits warned would be a lie-filled State of the Union address on Tuesday, and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) walked out before the president had even finished. The Democrat shared his reason on social media shortly before 11 p.m. “Walked out of the State of the Union because I couldn’t sit through hours of Trump’s lies,” Warner wrote Tuesday night on Bluesky. “Americans know the truth: he’s spiking prices and wrecking our economy. We’re a better country than this.” Trump delivered the longest State of the Union address ever, and entered it with his lowest approval ratings in five years. He spent much of the time flat-out lying about what he claimed were his accomplishments. Trump said that the economy is “roaring like never before,” even though it grew by only 2.2% in 2025 — less than in any year under former President Joe Biden — and falsely said gas now costs “below $2.30 a gallon in most states.” Warner reportedly hoped prior to the speech that Trump would at least discuss a potential U.S. war on Iran, arguing that it is “incumbent on the president to make the case” for what his goals are and “how we’re going to protect American interests in the region.” “If we don’t hear it tonight, we need to hear it very, very, very soon,” Warner said. Trump shared no specific details about the potential conflict and merely confirmed that both diplomacy and military force remain on the table. But Warner lasted much longer at Tuesday’s speech than many of his peers. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was ejected before Trump even started speaking for holding a sign protesting the racist video Trump posted of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) walked out after yelling about the fatal shootings last month of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents. Omar shouted at the president, “You have killed Americans!” Some Democrats opted to skip the event entirely, while others brought survivors of late child predator Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has tried to distance himself from his well-known past with Epstein. While he was clearly frustrated by the speech, Warner seemed prepared for it. “Buckle up for hours of lies tonight from the President,” he wrote Tuesday afternoon on Bluesky. “Americans know the truth: he’s wrecking our economy, spending tens of billions on an out-of-control secret police, and lining his own pockets with grift after grift.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
