President Donald Trump has spent a fortune in taxpayer dollars on his golf vacations and regularly falls asleep during formal meetings and briefings, but Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) on Tuesday said he is “the hardest-working president” in American history.

He showered Trump with praise during an appearance on the Fox Business Network.

“We got the hardest-working president ever,” said Tuberville. “He’s not getting a lot of help from Congress, either the House or the Senate, Republicans either. We’ve done a little bit here, we should’ve done another reconciliation on health care before the first of the year.”

He added, “We have another one we can do. All it takes is a little bit of work, but President Trump sleeps about two hours a day. He’s bound and determined not to just take care of the people, the taxpayers here, but as I said, the rest of the hemisphere.”

Tuberville’s comments have resulted in widespread mockery from critics on social media.

“Yeah, but he gets all his sleep during important daytime meetings, then spends all night posting lies and whining on social media,” wrote one user on X, with another user adding: “‘President Trump sleeps about 2 hours a day.’ And that’s during cabinet meetings.”

The president’s unorthodox sleep schedule prompted widespread fascination during his first term, but has since become more than a mere curiosity: Trump has frequently dozed off in public in recent months and appeared to have bruising on his hand and swelling in his legs.

The White House confirmed in July that Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, which occurs when the leg veins don’t allow blood to flow back to the heart, and announced in October that he was having his second “yearly” checkup in six months.

Tuberville appeared to echo an increasingly common MAGA narrative Tuesday with his remark that Trump is “determined,” as numerous senior administration officials and Trump himself have openly argued that the U.S. is in charge of the entire Western Hemisphere.

He went on to praise Trump for the U.S. military operation in Venezuela last month to oust now-former President Nicolás Maduro, which resulted in the seizure of the country’s oil, and defended Trump’s ongoing efforts for the U.S. to annex or acquire Greenland.

“What he did down in Venezuela was outstanding,” Tuberville said Tuesday. “What he’s trying to do in Greenland with the Golden Dome, all the things he’s put together, he’s doing hisself. Only thing we do is we do nominations.”

Tuberville has cheerfully championed Trump on many occasions before: he not only backed his baseless claims that the 2020 election was rigged, but argued after Trump’s diagnosis was announced that it might have been caused by him “fighting the radicals” on the left.

Last week, Tuberville suggested Presidents Day be renamed in the MAGA leader’s honor.

Tuberville has criticized Trump in the past, but appears to have been won over after receiving his endorsement in 2020. On Tuesday, he said Republicans “haven’t done a whole lot for the president” — and need to do more to help him pass the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote.
