Compton's in Saratoga suggests uncertain future

SARATOGA SPRINGS - A vague Facebook post suggested Thursday that Compton's, a beloved diner on Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs for 42 years, is struggling to stay open. The restaurant's posts said, "We will fight hard to continue to do the same thing that we have always done. We have a lot of things behind the scenes making it very hard to stay in business." It continued, "I am not allowed to fill everyone in on what is going on at this time but we are coming to a point soon that we will be able to." The author was not identified. The late founder, John Compton, retired in 2016, selling the business to his daughters, Sandy Compton and Tina Maher, and Maher's husband, William. An employee who answered the phone Friday morning said they were unavailable. Rochester-based developer Angelo Ingrassia bought the three-story Compton's building, at 457 Broadway, from the family in 2021 and the adjacent, single-story 453 Broadway four years earlier from another owner. Formerly a Bruegger's Bagels location, 453 Broadway is now a taproom for Cooperstown Distillery. Ingrassia's plan to add three stories above 453 Broadway, renovate the two floors of apartments in the Compton's building and erect a new structure behind them was approved by the city in late 2024, according to The Business Review. When he bought the Compton's building, it reported the restaurant had signed a lease allowing it to stay for another 10 years. It was unclear if the construction and renovation are related to Compton's difficulties. When reached by phone on Friday, Ingrassia declined to comment. Although Compton's Facebook post inspired abundant reactions, shares and comments expressing sympathy and hope, the employee who answered the phone said it had not been busier than usual. "It's been pretty much like any other day," she said. Once famed for its late-night hours and catering to bar patrons after their carousing, Compton's now serves breakfast and lunch daily. In November, it was named New York's best "hole-in-the-wall breakfast spot" by the website The Daily Meal as part of a 50-state roundup.
